Jan. 2 -Raiders take first in Independence tourneyTHOMPSON’S STATION — The Cleveland Blue Raiders wrestling team closed out the holiday season winning the championship trophy in the Independence High School Holiday tournament capturing six first-place medals. The raiders topped the heap with 179 points. Independence finished second with 134.5 and Cordova took third with 89.5.
Austin Oliver walked away with the championship at 103 pounds and Joel Simpkins won the top spot at 112. Winning at 119 pounds was Cleveland’s Hayden Hamilton. Marvin Lopez won first place at 130 pounds and bailey Jones earned the first-place hardware at 160 pounds. Jesse Jones topped the winner’s list for Cleveland with a championship at 215.
Aaron Lopez earned the runner-up spot at 140 pounds and the Raiders’ Isaiah Nichols finished second at 1452. Brandon Strickland ended the tournament in fourth at 125 pounds and Dre Moore took fourth place at 145.
The Blue Raiders return home for their biggest match of the season to date hosting the Soddy-Daisy Trojans on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
